Kumano Hayatama Taisha is located in Shingu
city, Wakayama prefecture.
This Hayatama Grand Shrine compound includes the mountain in the background
and ritual sites, Mfunejinja and Otabisho which are about 1km upstream
of the Kumano River.
The location of the shrine which adjoins the riverbank of the Kumano River
has remained without any change at least since the 12th century.
The Nagi tree in front of this shrine
Shinpokan is an old tree of Podocarpus nagi, which is estimated to be 800 years
old.
Legend tells that it was planted as a donation by a feudal lord, Tairano-Shigemori
when the shrine buildings were reconstructed in 1159.
